As the heat of summer fades away in the Cowichan Valley, fall brings a calm, reset that many of us look forward to. Maybe you’re relieved by the end of a busy summer season and ready for cozy vibes or maybe you’re sad to see the freedom that summer brings, go. Probably, you’re feeling a bit of both. Either way, there are unique elements that fall undoubtedly brings and there’s no stopping it. It’s the season for cozy fashion, beautiful foliage, PSLs and indoor hobbies. Here are five things to do in the Cowichan Valley that capture the essence of autumn and help you fully appreciate this season’s distinct charm.
Farmer’s Market
Find the Duncan Farmers Market running in town square every Saturday year round. Fall is harvest season and the perfect time to shop all the local produce, crafts and decor. Find yourself some cozy knit wear, gifts for Christmas and get your local grocery shopping done all in one place.
Why not treat yourself to some tasty baked goods while you’re there as well?
Sea Lions
Visiting the California Sea Lions is always an entertaining fall activity in the Cowichan Valley. These blobby beasts make their way up the coast every fall to feed on the salmon who have returned to spawn. Stroll down the Fisherman’s Wharf and onto the lower dock. From there you can get about 20 meters away from piles of pinnipeds covering the entire outer dock. Pro tip: try to schedule your visit when the wind is blowing away from land.
Twofiveo Tours
Fall is arguably the best time of year to book a twofiveo wine, beer or cider tour. The crowds have passed which means more intimate experiences at the wineries. The landscape is full of beautiful fall colours and the weather is still beautiful, not too hot and not too cold. Take advantage of the serene shoulder season and treat yourself to a memorable twofiveo tour this fall in the Cowichan Valley.
Bioluminescent Kayaking
One of the best things to do in the Cowichan Valley is take a sunset kayaking tour in Cowichan Bay. Tours start at various times throughout the season depending on sunset. Spend time paddling around the estuary where you’re likely to see wildlife such as herons, river otters and seals. Once the sun goes down your guide will show you to an area where you can see bioluminescence glowing as you paddle. It is worthwhile adding this unique and surreal experience to your to do list in the Cowichan Valley.
Campfires
The dry summers we experience in the Cowichan Valley mean a campfire ban is pretty much guaranteed every summer. Something to look forward to in the fall months is that ban being lifted as the weather starts to allow for it. Pull up a camping chair, a cozy blanket and light up a fire with your friends and family. Make sure to find out if there are any fire bans in effect in your area beforehand and always make sure to practice campfire safety.
From wildlife to discovering local markets and business, there are plenty of unique activities that make for great things to do in the Cowichan Valley in fall. Hopefully these activities can inspire you to make the most of this beloved season!
